LAKELAND — A teenager was flown by life flight to a hospital in Florida after a car fell on him while he was working on a tire Monday, according to Lakeland’s police chief.

The boy, a 16-year-old student at Lanier County High School, was underneath the vehicle, working on a “doughnut” spare tire, when the jack twisted in muddy ground, said Police Chief Mike Slusher. The accident took place at about 6 p.m. near Sixth Street, he said.

Emergency medical technicians found no heartbeat when they arrived on the scene, Slusher said. They were able to revive his heart and he was airlifted to Shands Hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla., the chief said. The boy’s condition was not immediately available Wednesday afternoon.
