VALDOSTA — The Valdosta Board of Education is scheduled to vote on selling the current Valdosta High School at a called meeting Friday, according to an updated meeting agenda.

The original meeting agenda stated the board would only discuss the sale and take no binding vote on the matter, but the updated agenda confirms a vote will be taken.

The current VHS — built in the 1970s — was appraised for $3 million, Superintendent Todd Cason said. The Valdosta Lowndes Development Authority is in talks with the board to buy the building for an undisclosed amount.

The VLDA is acting on behalf of a buyer who wants to use the current VHS building — which was built in the 1970s — to house a medical school, according to Cason.

VLDA Executive Director Andrea Schruijer would not disclose who the potential buyer is or what type of medical school would be created, due to confidentiality agreements involved in the sale, she said.

VHS will move into a new, $83 million facility in 2018.

The board was scheduled to vote on the sale at its Dec. 13 meeting. However, after discussing the issue in executive session, the vote was tabled to allow the attorneys from both parties more time to talk, Cason said.

The called meeting will take place at 2 p.m. at the Superintendent’s Office, 1204 Williams St.
