QUITMAN — One man is dead after a Sunday morning traffic accident on North Laurel Street in Quitman. Two others sustained injuries in the crash.
Brandon Bivins, 19, of Hamlin Road, Quitman, was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Ronald Miller.
Passenger Jeffrey Robinson, 22, Carney Road, Quitman, was transported to South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta and was admitted to intensive care. He is still at the hospital, according to a press release from Quitman Police Department.
The second passenger, Duanta Roberts, 24, West Railroad Street, Quitman, had visible injuries and was treated and released from the Brooks County Emergency Room.
At about 1:43 a.m. Sunday, the Brooks County 911 Center received a call in reference to a wreck with injuries at 203 N. Laurel St.
The driver of a 1995 Ford Thunderbird had apparently lost control of the vehicle, struck a telephone pole and then struck the porch of a North Laurel residence, the press release said. The impact awakened the residence’s occupants, who called 911.
Minutes earlier, a vehicle matching the description of the accident vehicle was seen running a stop sign at a high rate of speed by a Quitman police officer, according to the press release.
The officer attempted to catch the vehicle but never got close enough to get a tag number, the press release said. The officer activated his lights, and the vehicle didn’t stop.
The officer contacted his supervisor and was told to end any pursuit of the vehicle, the press release said. The officer lost contact with the vehicle.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Evidence has been submitted to the state crime lab in Moultrie.
