The Valdosta State baseball team picked up two wins against the West Georgia Wolves (3-1, 5-0) and allowed just one run on the day in a Friday Gulf South Conference doubleheader sweep at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park.

The pair of wins improved the Blazers to 27-14 overall and lifted the team to 15-11 in GSC play on the season, while the Wolves fell to 6-20 overall and dropped to 13-25 on the year.

A pair of dominant pitching performances ruled the day for the Blazers, as Hunter Jones delivered seven solid innings of work to pick up the win in Game 1, while freshman Cooper Cain tossed seven scoreless innings in Game 2 for a complete game shutout. The duo improved to 6-3 and 3-0 on the season, respectively, while Blazer closer Beau Blair scored a save in Game 1 to mark his fifth of the year.

On offense, Valdosta State delivered the two runs that Jones needed in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Blazers a 2-0 lead.

Dalton Murray led off with a walk, and Chipper Andzel slapped a single to left. On the play, UWG’s left fielder Cade Marlowe misplayed the ball, which allowed Murray to score from first and put Andzel at third base. Two batters later, BJ White slugged a fly ball to deep left field, which allowed Andzel to score on a tag from third.

The two runs were enough, but Luke Suchon left no doubt in the bottom of the eighth, when he negated UWG’s only run of the game with a solo shot to left. The homer marked Suchon’s second of the season, gave the Blazers a 3-1 lead, and represented one of three hits for the Blazer first baseman on the day.

In Game 2, Valdosta State scored early and often to help boost Cain on the hill.

The Blazers used a Kendall Herron triple and a follow-up single by Ryan Slaughter to plate the first run of the game in the opening inning, and Andzel teamed up with Elias Macias in the bottom of the second to essentially lock the game up with back-to-back homers to lead off the inning.

The two home runs marked the first of the season for both Andzel and Macias, and the two-run second was more than enough for Cain, who secured his first complete game victory of the season after allowing the Wolves to rack up just three hits in the game.

The additional runs for the Blazers came in the third and the fifth, when Murray doubled home Suchon in the third and Suchon singled home Slaughter in the fifth.

Valdosta State closes out the weekend series against West Georgia at 1 p.m. today, looking for the series sweep at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park.
