MOULTRIE, Ga. — The stands at Mack Tharpe Stadium have often been filled to watch the Colquitt County football team play. A group of the county’s churches would like to see a similar turnout there on Saturday for the Turn 2017 community revival.

Or, as the Rev. Cornelius Ponder said, “If we can fill the stadium up on Friday nights, let’s fill it up this Saturday night for Jesus.”

More than 30 churches from throughout Colquitt County are putting on what Pastor John Eubanks characterized as a community evangelistic crusade.

The event will begin at 5 p.m. on Saturday and is scheduled to run through 8 p.m. A community barbecue will be served at its conclusion. Eubanks said plans have been made to feed some 2,500 people following the program.

Groups from throughout the county will provide music and singing and Terrence Jones, pastor at Strong Tower at Washington Park in Montgomery, Ala., will be the speaker.

Jones, son of Alfred and DaLaonne Jones, grew up in Colquitt County and played quarterback for the Packers in 1998-1999.

He also played football at Tuskegee University before going into the ministry. He earned his master of divinity degree in 2011.

Jones met wife Thais through the Campus Outreach at Tuskegee. The couple has five children.

The Colquitt County Pastor Prayer Group, which is the community’s interdenominational ministerial association, conceived the plan for the event and bright yellow signs have been seen for months throughout the county promoting it.

Prayer walks held at the stadium on February 11, March 11 and April 8 also have been held to help draw attention to the program.

Eubanks said he envisions the event helping bring people of Colquitt County together.

“The only way to unify the community is through the church,” Eubanks said.
