The annual Suwannee County Fair livestock sale was packed Saturday, April 8. There was standing room only and precious little of that as 4-H and FFA youth from around the area paraded their winning steers and hogs through the sale ring hoping for a high-dollar sale.

This year’s grand champion steer was bought by a group of two buyers. Columbia Livestock Market and Mobley’s Custom Cuts paid $3.10 a pound for the steer owned and showed by Rance Brown of Branford FFA. The steer weighed in at 1251 pounds and was graded select.

A larger group of buyers purchased the grand champion hog. The hog, owned by Jade Buchanan of Lafayette County, weighed 272 pounds and brought $11.50 a pound. The group of buyers, led by Ray Buchanan, was Heath Buchanan, Wyatt Taylor, Randall and Tammy Tucker, Cleo Hart, Jr. and Big Tobacco Warehouse.

Huffman and Gilmore bought the Reserve Champion steer. The steer, owned by Suwannee FFA member De Smith, weighed in at 1100 pounds, was graded choice and was sold for $2.40 a pound.

Mobley’s Custom Cuts bought the reserve champion hog. The hog weighed 252 and Mobley’s paid $4 a pound to Melba Duval for her hog.

Ravinn Dees exhibited the Homegrown Steer. Daniels Veterinary Services bought the steer. Tracie Daniels represented the service and paid $2.40 for the steer weighing 1089 graded at select.

Seventeen choice resale steers were bought by Mobley’s Custom Cuts at 70.25 cents per pound.

Twenty-five select resale steers were bought by Mobley’s for 70.25 cents per pound.

The 110 head of resale hogs were sold to a trio of buyers. Townsend Livestock Market, Columbia Livestock Market and Mobley’s Custom Cuts paid 38.50 cents a pound for the hogs.
