EDITORIAL: VSU is what’s ‘Happening’

Published 9:00 am Tuesday, August 22, 2017

The energy at The Happening at Valdosta State University is usually contagious.

The community-campus event is scheduled to return Thursday, Aug. 24.

It is time to turn the expected energy of The Happening into full-time synergy.

The educational, economic and cultural benefits of a major university in our community cannot be overestimated.

Valdosta should capitalize on its presence in even greater ways.

The Happening on campus is so full of energy and positivity that we cannot help but be inspired each year while in the midst of these bright, eager, smiling young people who have so many opportunities ahead of them.

We welcome VSU students back to campus with open arms.

Local businesses should, at the very least, look at the VSU student body as several thousand potential customers.

As we have suggested in the past, building bridges between students and our community is critical, and the incubation of a true college town environment could be a significant economic boon for Valdosta.

We encourage business owners to do their part to incubate a downtown that is inviting to students.

Offer student discounts or price points they can afford, create relaxed atmospheres where they can feel comfortable, and perhaps hang a banner welcoming them to the community and to your establishment.

If you have a venue, provide music and entertainment that will attract them.

It is difficult to imagine that our restaurants and retailers do not need the business.

Once again, we want to say welcome back to campus and welcome to our community.

We are glad to have you here.
