BRANFORD — The Branford Town Council is considering buying property which could expand Hatch Park and provide additional fields and practice areas for local teams.
Town council members discussed purchasing the 7.36-acre property during Tuesday’s meeting.
“I think it’s a no-brainer as far as the need for the town,” said council member Matt Burns.
Councilwoman Alice Childress agreed on the necessity.
“It’s the only place to grow,” she said.
Added Randy Herndon, Post 4 councilman: “If we can come up with the funds, I’d love to see us get it.”
The land is being sold at $20,000 per acre for a total cost of $147,200. There is an option for a four- or five-year payment plan. The funds to purchase the property would come from the recreation budget.
Burns suggested moving forward with a decision on Tuesday night.
Council President Charlie Daniel recognized that council members were in favor of purchasing the property, but he said there will be a budget meeting first on Aug. 15.
Jason Roberts, President of the Branford Babe Ruth League, was also present during the meeting.
Roberts spoke about the advantages to buying the land — it would provide a place for football teams to practice instead of the baseball outfields, and could be used for additional parking spaces — but he also said money would be taken from the recreation budget.
“I agree it is the only place for expansion in the foreseeable future,” Roberts said. “My only drawback would be where the funds come from.”
Scout Project accepted
Also at Tuesday’s meeting, Branford High student Wyatt Eakins asked for permission to utilize local parks for his Scout Project.
Eakins, a member of Troop 598, plans to build four bat houses and place them throughout parks in Branford.
Eakins said the bat houses will provide a safe place to habit and will also be useful to help decrease the population of mosquitos.
His proposal was accepted.
Internet Cafe proposal
Cricket Repsher attended Tuesday’s meeting and addressed the town council on her plan for an Internet Cafe business.
No vote was taken. The Town Council asked Repsher to provide a written proposal.
