ADEL
Carmeta S. Mathis
Mrs. Carmeta S. Mathis, 72, of Adel died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, at her residence. She was born Sept. 22, 1934, in Cook County to the late Bledsoe and Reba Webb Shiflett. Mrs. Mathis lived in Cook County all her life, was a member of New Life Baptist Church and retired as vice president of Adel Banking Co.
Mrs. Mathis is survived by her husband, Curtis A. Mathis, one son and daughter-in-law, Ricky and Sylvia Mathis, one sister, Peggy S. Griffin, all of Adel; grandchildren, Jeff and Melissa Oler and Scott and Annie Mathis; and three great grandchildren, Nicklas Oler, Samantha Oler and Kierstan Mathis, all of Hahira. She was preceded in death by her brother, Wilburn Shiflett.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 1, 2007, at 2 p.m. at New Life Baptist Church with the Rev. Stanley Hendricks and the Rev. Harris Whitman officiating. Interment will follow at New Life Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 6-9 p.m. at Boone-Lipsey Fuenral Home, Hwy. 41 South. –Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home.

Pearl M. Blair
Pearl M. Blair, 93, of Jasper Fla., passed away Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, at Suwannee Valley Nursing Center in Jasper Fla. The Hamilton County native and lifelong resident was born Sept. 5, 1913, to the late Charlie O. McGhin and Ollie Lewis McGhin. She was a homemaker and member of Jasper First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Blair was preceded in death by her husband Roy Lee Blair and two brothers, Byron and Lyle McGhin.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Charles F. (Marjorie) Blair of Tallahassee Fla., Alton (Caren) Blair of Jasper Fla., and Jerry (Luanne) Blair of Live Oak Fla; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 1, 2007, at Jasper United Methodist Church, Jasper Fla. Interment will follow at New Hope Baptist Church. The family will receive friends between the hours of 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, at Harry T. Reid Funeral Home in Jasper Fla. MORVEN
Howard Hughes
Howard Hughes, 82, of Morven, died on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, at South Georgia Medical Center. Born on Jan. 26, 1924, in Clearwater, Fla., he was the son of the late Roy and Flora Kirkland Hughes.
He is survived by three brothers, Marcus Edward Powers of Morven, Willis Powers of Worth County, Robert Harold Powers of Hawkinsville; three sisters, Resey Fountain and Sara Brantley of Ray City, Julia Mae Simmons of Nashville; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, at the Empire Cemetery in Lanier County with Mr. David Stalvey officiating. Burial will follow. Anita Williams Walker
Anita Williams Walker, 66, of Quitman passed away Friday, Dec. 29, 2006 at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman.
Born in Brooks County, she was the daughter of Marion Stroud and Ola Lee Mitchell Williams. She was hairdresser and a member of the First Baptist Church of Quitman.
She is survived by one daughter, Pam Stanfill of Sylvester; three sons, Daniel C. (Joy) Walker of Quitman, Ferrel “Sonny” (Olga) Walker of Valdosta, Terry (Karen) Spell of Quitman; a dear friend, Jerry Smith of Monticello, Fla.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two sisters, Kathryn (Harry) Hardwick of Lake Park, Alice Faye (Andrew) Clark of Thomasville; two brothers, Ronald (Janie) Williams of Vidalia, Bobby (Frances) Williams of Quitman; sister-in-law, Margaret Williams.
She was preceeded in death by her parents, Marion Stroud and Ola Lee Williams, grandparents Rueben and Blanche Mitchell, two brothers, Audis and Danny Williams, aunt and uncle Velma and LeRoy Godwin, and her husband, Ferrell Walker.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Quitman with the Rev. Marty Canes officiating. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Tifton.

Clara Puckett Winston
Clara Puckett Winston, 88, of Saint Joseph, Mo., formerly of Valdosta, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at the Fountains at Corby Place. Clara was born on Oct. 4, 1918, in Tifton. She earned an AB from Wesleyan College, a Bachelor’s of Music from Wesleyan Conservatory in Macon, and did postgraduate work at Julliard School of Music in New York City.
On June 15, 1940, she married Richard Kinnebrew Winston. The Winston family of three daughters and two sons moved to Valdosta in 1953, where Clara shared her musical gifts by accompanying the choir at the First United Methodist Church and actively volunteered with the Lowndes-Valdosta Arts Council (LVAC). After the death of her husband, Dr. Winston, in September 1998, Clara moved to Saint Joseph, Mo., home of her daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Wally McDonald.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Ralph Atticus Puckett and Clara Stedman Puckett; her husband, Richard Kinnebrew Winston; a brother, Thomas Stedman Puckett and a son, John Paul Winston.
Survivors include her daughters, Lane Winston Smith, Valdosta, Peggy Winston McDonald, Saint Joseph, Mo., Elizabeth (Libba) Winston, Tampa, Fla.; son, Richard Kinnebrew Winston, Jr, Leesburg; brother, Col. Ralph Puckett of Columbus; grandsons, H. Briggs Smith, Jr., Richard Winston Smith, Louis Jamison McDonald; granddaughters, Elizabeth Lane McDonald and Clara Elizabeth Winston; great-grandsons, Mason William and Logan Richard McDonald, Richard Winston Smith, Jr., Henry Gray Smith; great-granddaughters, Lane Mason Smith, Madeleine Ellis Smith and Leah Katheryn McDonald.
A memorial service was held at The Fountains at Corby Place on Dec. 29, 2006. A private family internment will be held at Sunset Hill Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007 at The First United Methodist Church.
