Sharon Ferguson, chief organizer of the Covey Festival, said the lineup of films, which screenings and events run through Oct. 27, is aimed at being culturally diverse. The film festival also aims to incorporate independent films that were well-received at major film festivals, Ferguson added.

“We have a mix of films,” she added, noting film themes range from nature, community, and themes of nurturing and responsibility.

Two children’s films will be screened at the downtown amphitheater through a partnership with the City of Thomasville.

“They (children) like coming outside and seeing the films,” Ferguson said.

The Covey Film Festival also will conduct a regional premiere of the film “Same Kind of Different as Me,” getting permission from Paramount Pictures for a showing in Thomasville.

“I’m excited about it,” Ferguson said.

Also among the films is “La-La Land,” which won six Academy Awards.

The month-long series of events also boasts film discussions, a luncheon, and a script table read.

All proceeds from the Covey Film Festival go to the Thomasville Community Resource Center.
