- Donations are being accepted at the Live Oak Police Department.
LIVE OAK — The Live Oak Police Department and Cooking For A Cause teamed up to fill a trailer full of non-perishable items for Texas.
Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas on Friday and resulted in wide-scale fooding.
The donations started Tuesday morning and by Wednesday afternoon, there were more items than space in the trailer.
Chief Buddy Williams said the plan is to give the donation to the families of the first responder families in Texas affected by Hurricane Harvey.
For those still wanting to donate, items can be dropped off at the LOPD station, 205 White Ave. SE. Branford residents can drop donations off at Branford Feed, 302 Suwannee Ave. NW.
Williams is currently asking for donations of personal hygiene items, hand sanitizer, sanitizer wipes, bug spray, baby food items and batteries.
For food items, he recommends pop-top cans so it can be easily opened and plastic cutlery to eat with.
He said they plan to start hauling the trailer to Texas at the first of next week but donations will be accepted as long as they are coming.
The items that will not fit on the trailer will be given to the Live Oak’s Elks Lodge for their Texas trip, Williams said.
According to the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office — Division of Emergency Management, Texas shelters are overrun with clothing, water and other supplies and recommend making cash donations to reputable organizations.
Visit www.nvoad.org to find an organization to send donations to. Emergency Management also encourages those making monetary donations to make sure to earmark where they desire those donations be used, for example “Hurricane Harvey Relief.”
Williams said there has been a steady stream of people donating.
Ashley and Matt Davis donated water and laundry detergent.
Ashley said after experiencing a flood with Tropical Storm Debbie, she knew they needed to help.
“The outpouring of the community has been amazing,” Williams said.
Len Stapleton with Cooking For A Cause said the response has been unbelievable.
