West Thomas Stadium set for renovations

Jordan Barela/Times-Enterprise Cairo High School's West Thomas Stadium is set to undergo renovations. 

CAIRO — As the Friday night lights go on and off at West Thomas Stadium this football season, renovations are set to occur in between.     

The Grady County Board of Education approved renovations to the Syrupmakers’ battling ground Tuesday, totaling $24,800.

The approved renovations are for West Thomas Stadium’s north endzone, which will aid in drainage improvement. 

Approved renovations are: 

• Form and pour new concrete steps and sidewalk — $10,000

• Removal of old steps, ramp and hauling dirt from field — $5,000 

• Tree removal — $3,000 

• New grass and seed — $2,500 

• New hand rails — $2,300 

• Fence removal — $2,000 

Grady County Schools technicians’ supervisor Dave Mitchell said the new steps construction would bring up to current standards. Curb and gutters also will be installed with the new steps to address the drainage issue.  

“In the long run, it will help us save money,” Mitchell said, noting potential cost savings in maintenance, among others. 

Renovations are set to take place during the current football season in between games. 

Funding for the renovations will come the school district’s general fund.
