“We had a great turnout this year,” Broe said.

Veterans Day falls on the 11th day in the 11th month to commemorate Armistice Day, the day World War I ended in 1919.

This year’s parade was in honor of Vietnam War veterans.

Gene McCook was selected as the 2017 Grand Marshal.

McCook served in Cambodia and Vietnam with the 25th Infantry Division, U.S. Army.

He was on a recon unit and also served on the Presidential Detail when President Lyndon B. Johnson arrived in Cam Ranh Bay. He was wounded twice and received the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

Chief Buddy Williams was the guest speaker.

Williams said he is a supporter of veterans and was proud to be the guest speaker.

“A hero is a person that is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities,” Williams said. “Folks, there are many heroes standing here with us today. If they are not here with us in person, they are here with us in spirit.”

Broe extended thanks to all of the sponsors, members of the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans and community members for a successful Veterans Day.
