CHATSWORTH, Ga. — A Chatsworth man who authorities say caused a wreck on Airport Road in Dalton in 2016 in which a 25-year-old father of three was killed was indicted by the Whitfield County grand jury for second-degree vehicular homicide.

A Georgia State Patrol crash report said Stephen Trollinger was the driver of a 2000 Ford Ranger on the morning of May 24, 2016, when the Ranger crossed the center line driving south on Airport Road and collided head-on with a 1999 GMC Suburban driven by Erasmo Damian Arredondo. Arredondo was traveling with his fiancee and his three children and died at the scene. The other passengers in the Suburban escaped serious injury. Trollinger was airlifted by Life Force helicopter to Erlanger hospital in Chattanooga.

At the time of the wreck, Georgia State Patrol Cpl. E. Tommy Bonaparte said a witness following the Ranger said the vehicle made a sharp turn to the left, colliding with the Suburban and giving the driver of the Suburban no time to avoid the collision. The Suburban flipped on its side, trapping Arredondo, the woman and the three children who were under the age of 2 until the top of the vehicle was removed by a hydraulic cutting tool.

• The grand jury also indicted a man for aggravated sexual battery and attempted rape who was arrested in November of last year. Jose Carmelo Mendoza-Gonzalez was arrested by the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office after a woman told deputies she awoke to find Mendoza-Gonzalez attempting to have sex with her while she was staying at the home of a family member on Wooten Drive.

When arrested, Mendoza-Gonzalez was also charged with possession of meth and possession of tools for the commission of crime. He is being held at the county jail without bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 1.
