Man identified in Hahira train fatality

HAHIRA — A South Carolina man died in a train accident downtown early Monday morning.
Forty-eight-year-old Dexter Brown, a C&S Rail Construction employee, was driving westbound on Lawson Street in a C&S Rail Service dump truck when he failed to yield for an oncoming freight train, according to a Georgia State Patrol release.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
After the collision, parts of the truck and a tractor the truck was hauling became wedged under the train. This caused all railroad crossings in Hahira to be cut off for multiple hours as the tractor was removed from the train, GSP reports.
Georgia State Patrol Post 31 Valdosta troopers are investigating the crash involving the Norfolk Southern Train. The incident happened at 8:35 a.m.
The train was traveling south and the dump truck was traveling west on West Lawson Street. The driver of the dump truck failed to yield to the train and entered into the path of the train.
GSP states the front of the train struck the passenger’s side of the dump truck, ejecting the driver.
No alcohol or drugs are suspected.
