Frye leads strong Branford offense

Senior Brittany Frye, a Maryville College signee, leads a strong Branford offense in 2018.

BRANFORD — The Branford High School softball program is on the rise — three straight winning seasons and 34-26 record during that period with mostly young teams.

After a 12-9 mark in 2017, BHS coach Oscar Saavedra is excited for this year as he returns a lot of his starting lineup.

“This year our infielders are pretty much the same girls. Outfield is going to be all new,” Saavedra said. “The girls that have moved up look really good during conditioning and the first couple weeks of practice.

“We’ve got a lot of options. I’m super excited.”

The Bucs are lead by senior catcher Brittany Frye, who hit .604 with five home runs and 25 RBIs last season. With Frye in the middle of the order, and some proven hitters around her, offense should be a strength again this season. All of Branford’s starting infielders hit above .300 last season as the Bucs averaged nearly eight runs per game.

They also played pretty good defense with sure-handed middle infielders Adrianna Saavedra (second base) and Chloe Linton (shortstop).

The Bucs do have to fill a hole in the circle after graduating pitcher MacKenzie Frye. Kayley Walker will step in as Branford’s starting pitcher.

“Kayley Walker is going to be our ace in the hole,” Saavedra said. “She works hard. Defensively, we’ve looked strong to help her out.”

Branford opens up the season today at rival Lafayette.
