VALDOSTA — Lowndes’ boys tennis team keeps on winning.

The Vikings, who were state semifinalists last year, improved to 11-1 with a 5-0 sweep of Coffee Thursday afternoon at LHS. Lowndes did not drop a set in winning the five matches.

“This makes us 5-0, and we’re still undefeated in the region,” Lowndes head coach Heath Phelps said.

“We went undefeated in the region last year, and we’d like to do the same this year.

“We’ve had a good year so far. This is the deepest team we’ve had since I’ve been coaching here, on the boys and the girls’ side. I’ve got players I can rotate in at one of the varsity positions if I need to.”

For the Vikings, Mikey Millner won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Clayton Griffin won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Thomas Baltrus won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. In the doubles, Dane Boruff and Eli Rountree teamed up to win 6-2, 6-2, while Andrew Smith and Perry Pulido won 6-4, 6-0.

The win also made the Vikings 5-0 in Region 1-AAAAA this year. Lowndes’ only loss this year was to Greater Atlanta Christian, the defending AA champion, in the LaGrange tournament last weekend.

“We went up to LaGrange so we could play some of the best competition,” Phelps said. “The best competition in the state is in the Atlanta area, so I wanted us to face some of those teams, so we’ll be ready when we see that kind of competition in the playoffs. We lost (to GAC), but it was a close match, and they went on to win the tournament.”

Meanwhile, Lowndes’ girls avenged an earlier loss to Coffee, this time defeating the Lady Trojans 4-1. The win improved the Vikettes’ record to 9-3 (3-2 in the region).

“This was a big win for the girls, since Coffee had beaten them earlier,” Phelps said.

“The girls were glad to win this one. This helps them in the region standings.”

Lacey Hansen won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and Tayler Jarvis won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Savannah Roberts and Leah Taylor won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Alison Keener and Lynde Taylor came out on top in the longest match of the day, splitting the first two sets, 6-3, 3-6, before winning a tiebreaker 10-5. Coffee earned its lone victory at No. 3 singles.

“The girls all played good matches,” Phelps said. “We have good depth on our girls team, both in singles and doubles.”

In junior varsity action Thursday, Zack Soubannarath won his match 8-6, then teamed up with his brother Max to win a doubles match, 6-0, 6-3. Andrew Odom won 6-4, 6-1, and his brother Matt Odom won 6-0, 6-0. In girls’ JV play, Tayler McGee won 8-4.

Lowndes tennis will be back in action again on Saturday, facing Houston County. Next week, LHS will face Colquitt County on Tuesday and Houston again on Friday.

“That will be a big match for our boys,” Phelps said. “We haven’t seen Houston yet this season, so we don’t know what they’ve got. I’ve heard they’ve improved from last year. We want to win all of our matches, so we don’t have to play in the region tournament, and we can get the No. 1 seed in the state playoffs.”
