Valdosta State senior Jacinda Miller won the Annie Poew Hopper Award at the annual Academic Honors Dinner Thursday night.

Miller, a psychology major who rans cross country, took home the university’s highest honor after being a staple in the team’s lineup throughout the 2018 season.

She was voted on by her teammates as the lone team captain for the women’s program at the beginning of both of her junior and senior seasons. Beyond the course, Miller was a beacon in the classroom and finished her academic career with a 3.83 cumulative GPA. Thursday’s honor complemented the Most Outstanding Psychology Bachelor of Science Award, which Miller received on April 20.

The well-rounded efforts of the Washington, D.C., native made her just the fifth student-athlete in Valdosta State history to earn the honor, which was first presented to Beverly Anne Greene on May 2, 1962. The award was named in honor of the institution’s first dean of women and is presented annually to a senior that represents the high academic standards and exemplifies the traditions of VSU.

As the newest recipient, Miller joins another cross country runner, Melissa Daugherty, who won the award in 2008, along with Bridgett Moore, Michelle Petree and Beth Clark, who each won the award as members of the basketball program.
