Suezette Wiggins lost her school board seat in the Aug. 28 election. 

JASPER — Hamilton County will have a new face in the School Board District 5 seat.

Sammy McCoy beat incumbent Suezette Wiggins by 40 votes during Tuesday’s election.

“Thank you to the voters of District 5 for electing me,” McCoy said.

McCoy received 301 votes and Wiggins received 261.

“I would like to extend my appreciation to the District 5 voters who allowed me to be their representative for the last four years,” Wiggins said. “It has been a wonderful experience and I would also like to wish the best to the person who beat me in this election.”

With 7,660 registered voters in Hamilton County only 2,230 ballots were cast. The voter turnout was 29.11 percent, slightly higher that the 29 percent for Florida.

“It was a successful election with no hiccups,” Supervisor of Elections Laura Hutto said. “We would have liked to have more voters turnout but we are happy of those who did vote.”

Andrew Gillium won the Democratic nomination for Governor. He will face Republican nominee Ron DeSantis in the General Election.

Gillium won the local vote with 509 votes, while Adam Putnam won the county’s Republican Governor race with 481 votes.

DeSantis received 428 votes.

Sean Shaw won the Democratic Attorney General race with 1,024,297 votes in the state. His Republican opponent will be Ashley Moody, with 880,070 votes.

In the county race, Shaw received 772 votes while his Democrat opponent, Ryan Torres received 301.

Moody received 635 votes and her Republican opponent, Frank White received 296 votes.

Chuck Brannan won the Republican State Representative District 10 race against his opponent Marc Vann.

Brannan received 9,287 votes while Vann received 7,449 votes district-wide.

In the county, Brannan received 574 votes and Vann received 368 votes.

Brannan will now face Democrat candidate Ronald W. Williams II and non-party candidates Merrillee Malwitz-Jipson and Fred Martin, of McAlpin, in November’s general election.

“Live to fight another day,” Brannan said. “We won’t slack up. We’ll keep marching on toward November now.

“We do appreciate the support we got. We were pleased. Humbled that people thought that much of us, but pleased that we move on to the next phase.”

Nicole “Nikki” Fried won the state’s Democratic race for Commissioner of Agriculture and also was the top choice locally with 516 votes. In the Republican race, Matt Caldwell — the state winner — also topped Hamilton ballots with 421 votes.

Incumbent Al Lawson will face republican opponent, Virginia Fuller in November for the U.S. Representative District 5 seat.

In the district, Lawson received 53,833 votes while his opponent, Alvin Brown received 35,389.

In Hamilton County, Lawson received 833 votes and Brown received 312 votes.

Rick Scott will face Bill Nelson at polls in November for the U.S. Senate seat.

In the state, Scott received 1,452,952 votes while his opponent Roque De La Fuente received 186,636.

In Hamilton County, Scott received 861 votes while De La Fuente received 100 votes.
