VALDOSTA— The Valdosta High School varsity boys’ basketball team played their last home game of 2024 in dramatic fashion Friday night, defeating Ware County’s Gators 67-64 in overtime.
In a game marked by early struggles and late heroics, the Wildcats showed heart and determination, returning to avenge an earlier loss in the year to Ware County.
The Gators came out firing in the first quarter, led by Jarvis Wright’s impressive shooting. Wright sank multiple jumpers and three-pointers as Ware County built a commanding 19-8 lead. The Wildcats struggled to contain the Gators’ quick offense and aggressive rebounding, falling behind early.
Head coach James Lee pulled the team together during a timeout to address their early struggles. “I always tell my kids you have to stay grounded in the moment—basketball is a game of runs,” Lee said.
Valdosta stayed focused, slowly chipping away at the Gators’ lead in the second quarter. Jabarri Williams, Jerry Butler, and Shawn Evans sparked momentum, while defensive adjustments began limiting Ware County’s chances. By halftime, the Wildcats trailed just 28-34.
The third quarter saw a back-and-forth battle, with Valdosta working hard to close the gap but unable to overtake the Gators. Darius Ward opened with a three-pointer for the Gators, while Valdosta’s Shawn Evans and Kaleb Johnson responded with key baskets. Despite Valdosta’s efforts, including points from Brandon Brown and Williams, the Gators maintained control, ending the quarter ahead 49-42.
The fourth quarter was an intense showdown, with Valdosta steadily closing the gap. Williams and Brown pushed to narrow the deficit, and Braylan Deas tied the game at 53-53. A clutch three-pointer from Gator Jarvis Wright briefly broke the tie, but free throws from Williams brought Valdosta within one.
With three minutes remaining, Valdosta took the lead 57-56; then, a free throw by Gator Tayshaun Franklin tied it up at 57-57. The Gators had a final shot to win but missed, sending the game into overtime.
Brown stole the show during overtime, scoring crucial free throws and delivering a highlight-reel falling two-pointer to give Valdosta the edge. With the seconds dwindling, Brown sealed the game with a mean three-pointer, solidifying his role as a hero for the night. The Wildcats closed the game 67-64, claiming a hard-fought victory.
After the game, Coach Lee discussed the journey of the young players and the significant improvements that contributed to the high-intensity game on Friday.
Lee emphasized the team’s significant growth and preparation throughout the regular season, highlighting the value of their challenging schedule. By competing against tough opponents, the team has sharpened its skills and built resilience, a key strategy Coach Lee always tries to implement.
Despite the team’s youth, Lee expressed confidence that their rigorous training and demanding schedule minimized potential disadvantages. He also praised the team’s camaraderie, noting that their close bond is one of this season’s strongest and most rewarding elements.
“Our morale is great. This is one of the closest teams that I have been around,” stated Lee. “They genuinely love each other and spend time with each other away from the game.”
The Wildcats’ regular season is coming to an end, with regionals quickly approaching. Their first opponent will be Richmond Hill in an away game on Jan. 3, 2025.
