VALDOSTA — They arrived in a red Dodge Charger blaring “Eye of the Tiger” from its speakers, looking for blood.
Valdosta Fire Chief Freddie Broome and Police Chief Brian Childress spoke to reporters Friday across from City Hall about the upcoming Guns and Hoses blood drive competition between the two departments.
The big match, now in its fourth year, takes place Thursday, July 26, at the Valdosta City Hall Annex multi-purpose room at 300 N. Lee St.
Broome said the goal is for at least 50 donors to show up, though he hopes for 75. Last year, 40 donors gave blood, Broome said.
The area is suffering a blood shortage, he said.
“We’re entering into hurricane season, so you want the blood there for disasters,” Broome said.
The fire department has taken the title for the last two years, and Broome — who came to the interview dressed as a prizefighter — said there’s a bit of a bet running between the two chiefs.
“In the past, Chief Childress has promised to wash my car if the police lose,” he said. “Well, he’s two cars behind, so he may wind up washing a fire truck.”
