VALDOSTA — Fall rain delayed construction of the Georgia Theatre Xtreme theatre at Valdosta Stadium Cinemas, said Jim Cody, general manager.
Between continuous rainfall in July and August and the hurricanes in October, Cody said the GTX screen is expected to be finished in February 2019. Initially, the GTX was supposed to be completed in late 2018.
“We’ve had a ton of rain, and site work was delayed because of the rain,” he said. “So, it took us a while to get it down to the ground, but they are rolling pretty good now.”
Once complete, the GTX will be in a five-story auditorium and have a 7.1 Dolby Atmos sound system, recliners and digital projection on to a roughly 70-foot-by-40-foot screen, Cody said.
The recliners will be black and have automatic, motorized reclining features, he said.
“It’s a luxury recliner, everyone should really love them,” he said.
There will be around 250 luxury seats in the theatre on tiered risers that are a little higher than the other theatres at the cinemas, he said. In comparison, the other big theatres have 299 seats, but usually only seat around 250-260 individuals.
Cody anticipates that because of the recliners spacing there will be no issues with filling the seats.
While some similar theatres use reserved seating systems where customers purchase specific seats, Cody said he isn’t sure if Valdosta cinemas will follow suit.
“I have not gotten the official word on whether or not it will be reserved seating, but it’s likely,” he said.
Cody said in a previous interview the inclusion of the GTX experience is to “give customers something more than what we have now,” and that “it’s going to be a really nice presentation; it’s going to be bigger and better.”
