Henry Edwin “Chummy” Barnes
MORVEN — Henry Edwin “Chummy” Barnes, 56, of Morven died on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at South Georgia Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born in Brooks County, he was the son of Comer Gibson and Jewell Scott Barnes. He was a salesman for Coastal Plains Co-Op and attended Gateway Baptist Church.
Mr. Barnes is survived by his wife Barbara Barnes of Morven; a daughter Hope Swiers, of Valdosta; a son Eric (Clorissa) Barnes of Morven; four grandchildren; Tristan, Radney, Macie, and Kali; his mother, Jewell Barnes of Morven; one sister Robbie (Jackie) Becton of Adel; five brothers, Duck (Jeanie) Barnes of Valdosta, Norris (Levetta) Barnes of Savannah, Raleigh (Dell) Barnes of Morven, Melvin (Ellen) Barnes of Morven, and Stanley Barnes of Morven.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2003, in Gateway Baptist Church with the Rev. Nelson Grist, and Pastor Keith Allsbrook officiating. Burial will follow in Campground Cemetery in Morven, Ga.

Crystabell McAllister Oxford
SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. — Crystabell McAllister Oxford, 94, of Simpsonville, S.C. died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, in S.C. after a lengthy illness.
Born in Morven, Ga., she was a homemaker, a clerk in the family owned grocery store in Doerun, Ga. and a member of the Morven Baptist Church.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Sten and Teresa Oxford of Simpsonville, S.C.; one grandchild; Tracy Oxford of Nashville, Tenn. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Winifred Scruggs, Modena McAllister; and two brothers, Roy McAllister and Buck McAllister.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2003, in Campground Cemetery in Morven, Ga. with the Rev. Shane Ashley officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. tonight. — Maxwell-Miller Funeral Home, Quitman
Dr. W. Goddard Sherman, Jr.
VALDOSTA — Dr. W. Goddard Sherman, Jr., 81, of Valdosta died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born on Aug. 28, 1921, in Jacksonville, Fla. to the late Dr. William Goddard, Sr. and Helen Smith Sherman. Dr. Sherman was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II and the Pacific Theatre. He was a minister in the United Methodist Church, attended the Park Avenue United Methodist Church and a member of the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church. Dr. Sherman was a free lance cartoonist, a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Brown University and Pitt-Xenia Seminary and received his Doctorate of Theology from Luther Rice Seminary.
Survivors include his wife, Sally Sherman; one daughter and son-in-law, Jocelyn and Jim Boyle; two sons, Paul Raymond Sherman and Timothy William Sherman, three granddaughters, Sarah Boyle, Stephanie Boyle and Allison Boyle, all of Valdosta; one sister, Ethelyn Grimshaw of Johnston, R.I. He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen S. Wood.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2003, at the Park Avenue United Methodist Church with Dr. Craig Rikard, Dr. Duncan L. Gray, the Rev. V.L. Daughtery, the Rev. Bob Dorsey and the Rev. Doug Veal officiating. Burial will follow in McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. H. Raymond Wright, Jr.
VALDOSTA — H. Raymond Wright, Jr., 82, of Valdosta died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born on Aug. 9, 1920, in Miami, Fla. and had lived in Valdosta for many years. Mr. Wright was a retired aeronautical engineer with Curtis Wright Co. and was later associated with Grumman Aerospace designing hydrofoils. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in World War II and a member of the Crossroads Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Myra Swindell Wright of Valdosta; and his son, Ray Wright III who lives in The Adirondack Mountains of upstate N.Y. He
was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret F. Wright, his father, H. Raymond Wright, Sr. and his stepmother, Katie Mae Wright.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2003, in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Daniel and the Rev. Stephen Carr officiating. Mr. Jeffery R. Copeland, 41, of Valdosta demised on Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at South Georgia Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2003, at Evergreen Baptist Church. The Rev. Alvin Carter, pastor will officiate. Funeral services for Mr. Herman Odom, age 75, of Dixie, Ga., will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2003, at 3 p.m. at the Beulah Hill Baptist Church in Dixie, Ga., with Rev. J.T. Turner officiating. Funeral services for Mrs. Gertrude Roberson, age 78, of Valdosta, Ga., will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2003, at 3:30 p.m. at the Beulah Baptist Church of Quitman, Ga. with Dr. Horace L. Tucker, pastor officiating. Burial will follow in the First Elizabeth Cemetery in Dixie, Ga. The family will receive friends and relatives at the Stevens-McGhee Funeral Home Chapel between the hours of 7-8 p.m. Saturday morning. Stevens-McGhee Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Aaron Sharpe, 63, passed this life Feb. 27, 2003. Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced later by Harrington Funeral Home.

Mrs. Chellamae Whaler, 83, of Adel died on Feb. 26, 2003, at Kindred Medical Center in Atlanta. Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Woodlawn Cemetery Annex with Ralph Griffis officiating.
