Preseason all-area softball team announced

Charlie Jones is one of three Lafayette High juniors on the preseason all-area softball team.  

With the high school softball season set to begin in North Florida, there are sure to be plenty of breathtaking plays and remarkable performances from the outstanding softball players at Lafayette, Branford, Suwannee and Hamilton County. Whether its a long home run, a diving catch or a brilliant pitching performance, each member of the Suwannee Valley All-Preseason Team is guaranteed to bring the crowd to its feet.   

Here’s a look at the players to watch for the 2019 season.  

Suwannee

Maci Brown 

Brown, who starts at first base for SHS, has hit for both average and power in her first two seasons. She sports a .329 career average with five home runs and 45 RBIs.

Carson Frier

A catcher, shortstop and outfielder, Frier gives Suwannee plenty of options on defense. She hit .318 as a freshman with four doubles and two triples.  

Karis Smith

A standout freshman pitcher, Smith will play a key role in Suwannee’s success.  


Lafayette

Richelle McDonald

McDonald averaged more than one strikeout per inning last season and finished with an impressive 1.77 ERA. She also pitched well against some strong offenses, keeping Trenton, Madison County and Suwannee at bay. At the plate, she drove in 11 runs and scored 18 runs.

Charlie James 

James started every game for LHS last season. She hit .329 with six stolen bases, 21 RBIs and 14 runs scored. 

Hannah Murray

Batted .273 with one home run, five doubles and 21 RBIs as a sophomore. 


Branford 

Destiny Fennell

The left-hander has started the last three seasons for Branford and has a .373 career average. She hit .489 last season with four extra-base hits and 12 RBIs. 

Adrianna Saavedra

A starter since seventh grade, Saavedra is a .374 career hitter in four varsity seasons. She batted .383 last season with eight RBIs. Saavedra will make the move from second base to shortstop this season.  


Hamilton County 

Shay Hampton

A middle infielder, Hampton will look to make an impact on offense and defense for a young Hamilton County team.
