Jughead: The Hunger

Jughead is a werewolf.

That’s the premise behind “Jughead: The Hunger.”

Archie’s best pal becomes a creature of the night. Moose is a Frankenstein-like construct called FrankenMoose.

It’s all part of the Archie Horror line, which includes “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” “Vamperonica,” a vampire Veronica, and “Blossoms 666.”

“Jughead: The Hunger” has a combination of horror and dark humor.

Even the title is a joke, given the character’s decades-old love of hamburgers and malteds. Jughead has always been hungry and has always been eating in the classic Archie Comics.

And let’s face it, the idea of a Frankenstein Moose is both horrific and strangely humorous. And Veronica as a blood sucker seems appropriate.

There’s even a crossover series, “Jughead the Hunger vs. Vamperonica,” scheduled for release in April. In “Jughead: The Hunger,” there are no vampires because werewolves won. In “Vamperonica,” there are no werewolves because the vampires won. The crossover crosses the two worlds, flinging Jughead and Veronica together again.

“Jughead: The Hunger” reaches its 12th issue Feb. 20.

The first several issues have already been re-released as a trade paperback collection.
