DALTON, Ga. — Dalton Brewing Company celebrates its first anniversary on Saturday with a daylong block party featuring food, live music, a bevy of new brews and other activities.

King Street, where the brewery is in downtown Dalton, will be closed off between Hamilton and Pentz streets from 1 to 10 p.m. for the event, although last call is at 9 p.m.

Local bands Barrelhouse (a self-described hard-driving, classic rock band) and The Sneary Family Band (covers of bluegrass, classic rock and modern music) play from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., respectively.

“It should be a laid back feel, and hopefully the weather cooperates,” said Chris Brown, one of the four founders and owners of DBC.

Brown said they had about 1,800 people attend the two-day event celebrating the company’s opening last year, and they hope for about 1,000 revelers this year. He said the event is a celebration of everything the brewery has accomplished as a maker of beer but also of the community ties they have established.

An Atlanta United supporters group that often watches the pro soccer team’s matches at the brewery will have a tent, the Run DBC running club kicks off the day with a beer relay race, food from a food truck and other downtown restaurants that deliver to the brewery will be available, and nine beers will be released for the first time during the event, including seven sours.

Drew Michaels, another of the founders and owners who heads up the day-to-day brewing process, said the following nine beers will be released Saturday, with the sours coming one each hour of the block party: peach sour, cranberry sour, pomegranate sour, blackberry sour, sweet cherry sour, pink guava sour, blood orange sour, vanilla chocolate cake stout and birthday India pale ale.

Michaels said the introduction of so many sours is something that meets the tastes of people who prefer a fruity flavor, but the style of beer comes with its own set of challenges.

“Since we opened our doors our customers were wanting sours,” Michaels said. “Sours are tricky because you introduce a bacteria called lactobacillus to the process which brings out the sour flavor. It is risky because the bacteria is actually airborne and can infect the equipment. As a new small business we do not have the luxury of multiple brewing systems or separate facilities. We decided to use a safe process where we end up boiling after the souring called kettle souring. We are excited about many of the flavors and hope that we can introduce them to the customer that would typically like fruity cocktails or wine.”

Brown said a second canned beer will also be available Saturday. The company already sells its mango IPA in cans, but DBC will offer its Kölsch (a German-style brew) as well.

The brewery is at 112 W. King St. and Saturday’s block party is family and pet friendly, organizers said.
