Sam J. Atkinson

Sam J. Atkinson, 72, of Adel passed away Sept. 18, 2006, at his residence.

He was born on Aug. 16, 1934, in Cook County to the late Ollie Robert and Myrtice Sutton Atkinson. He was retired in commercial construction, an Army veteran who fought during the Korean war and was a member of the Church of God.

He is survived by Betty Fulp Atkinson of Adel; one son, Eric Atkinson of Titusville, Fla.; one daughter and son-in-law, Myrna and Joey Wise of Haines City, Fla.; grandchildren, Chris and Barbara Wise, Haines City, Fla., Jill Wise, Haines City, Fla., Brittany Atkinson, Titusville, Fla., Steven Atkinson, Titusville, Fla.; great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Wise, Haines City, Fla.; one brother, Jerry J. Atkinson, Dothan, Ala.; one sister, Roberta Wetherington, Nashville.

Graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., today, Sept. 20, 2006, in Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery with Carl Fulp providing the opening prayer; Dr. Lora Efaw providing scripture and comments and the Rev. Charles Blair giving the benediction. — Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home, Adel



HOMERVILLE

Ruby Stone Palmer

Ruby Stone Palmer, 74, passed away Monday, Sept. 18, 2006, at the South Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.

Mrs. Palmer was born in Alapaha, on Oct. 16, 1931, to the late Jim Buster and Frannie Jane Dubose Stone. She was a retired industrial worker at Brockway Standard and a member of the Shiloh Southern Congregational Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Palmer; one son, Roger Palmer; one brother, Charlie Stone.

Survivors are one daughter and son-in-law, Libby and Tony Meeler of Sparks; four sons and daughters-in-law, Virgil and Maria Palmer, Michael and Darlene Palmer, Tony Palmer, all of Homerville, Richard and Gail Palmer of Valdosta; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lester and Lucille Stone of Lenox, Vick and Deloris Stone of Tifton; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and several other relatives.

Services for Mrs. Palmer will be held Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006 at 11 p.m. at the Shiloh Southern Congregational Methodist Church. Internment will be in Red Bluff Cemetery in Atkinson County. JACKSONVILLE, FLA.

Joyce F. Horne

Joyce F. Horne, 69, of Jacksonville, Fla., and formerly of Valdosta, died on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006, in Jacksonville. Born on Nov. 25, 1936, in Valdosta, he was the son of the late Malcolm Horne and Jessie Hightower Horne. Mr. Horne moved to Jacksonville in the mid 1950’s and was a career insurance agent with Gulf Life and later American General Insurance Companies. He retired in 1998 from American General.

He is survived by his sisters, Diane Monds and Gayle Mann, both of Macclenny, Fla.; his life’s partner of over 20 years, Becky Moncur of Jacksonville; sister-in-law, Jean Horne of Orange Park; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Jackie M. Horne.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, in Cat Creek Cemetery in Valdosta with the Rev. John Akers officiating. Ronnie Thomas Bennett

Ronnie Thomas Bennett, 51, of Nashville passed away Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, at his residence.

He was born on Oct. 22, 1954, in Lowndes County to the late J.B. Bennett Jr. and Mina Lou Nix Bennett. He was a loom mechanic with Nashville Mills and was a member of Forest Hill Freewill Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann Kinnebrew Bennett of Nashville; one daughter, Kathy (David) Holbrook, Palatka, Fla.; one son, Damon (LaDonna) Bennett, Nashville; five grandchildren; five sisters, Hilda Tidwell, Ray City, Helen Hannon, Ann Skinner, Bonnie Jilcott, Vanessa Bennett, all of Nashville; two brothers, James Bennett and Wayne Bennett, both of Nashville.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, in the chapel of Lovein Funeral Home with the Rev. Mitchell Deems and the Rev. Carl Morrison officiating. Nancy Mainor Lee

Mrs. Nancy Mainor Lee, 94, of Sparks passed away Sept. 19, 2006, at Memorial Convalescent Center of Adel.

She was born on May 24, 1912, in Berrien County to the late Elijah Batie and Sarah Elizabeth Griffin Taylor. She was a homemaker and member of Hope Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard Mainor; and her second husband, Felton Lee.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Delores Mainor of Adel, Earl and Carolyn Mainor of Hiawassee; one daughter and son-in-law, Sara Alice and Herbert Hendley, Hiawassee; one stepdaughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Johnny Harrell, Nashville; 10 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 4 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, in the chapel of Boone-Lipsey Funeral Home with the Rev. Al Lewis and the Rev. Steve Pickern officiating. Willie B. ‘Bill’ Jarvis

Willie B. “Bill” Jarvis of Sparks passed on to be with the Lord on Sept. 18, 2006, at his home due to a lengthy illness. He was born on March 9, 1923, in Tift County to the late Marshall and Minnie Harris Jarvis. Mr. Jarvis was a member of First Assembly of God and a WWII veteran. He retired from Talley Corbett to go home and enjoy his loving family and spent time helping his daughter in her Outreach Ministries.

Mr. Jarvis is survived by his wife, Eva Nell Dukes Jarvis of Sparks; one daughter, Linda Jarvis Weeks and husband Ronald of Sparks; two sons, Rickie Jarvis and wife Evelyn of Sparks and Dewayne Jarvis of Sparks. The Lord blessed Mr. Jarvis with seven grandchildren, Desiree Lundvall of Denver, Colo., Stacey Lovejoy and husband C.J. of Sparks, Kelley Myers and husband Brian, Sabrina Beck and husband Sheldon, Ronnie Weeks, Glinda Giddens and husband Travis and Will Weeks, all of Sparks; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ruth Jarvis Lindsey of Fort White, Fla. Mr. Jarvis was preceded in death by three brothers, Rufus Jarvis, Noah Jarvis and Laddie Jarvis; and four sisters, Mattie Harvis Lindsey, Jeanie Jarvis, Tennis Jarvis Harris and Lettie Jarvis Roden.

Rena M. Gay

Rena M. Gay, 94, of St. Augustine, Fla., died on Monday, Sept. 18, 2006. Born in Clyattville on Aug. 29, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Horace Samuel and Lou Tishey Chason Zipperer. A member of Anastasia Baptist Church, Mrs. Gay was a homemaker and seamstress. She enjoyed crafts, sewing, and working with her hands.

Survivors are her daughters, Dorothy Ann (Herbert) Sowell of St. Augustine, Fla., Mildred Jeanette Crawley of Jonesboro; a son, Roy Cleveland (Gayle) Gay of Sarasota, Fla.; sister, Sarah Dasher of Twin Lakes; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Charlie C. Gay.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with burial held in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Ron Moore will officiate. Jessie Lee Rewis

Jessie Lee Rewis, 74, of Statenville passed away Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, at her home following an illness of some time. Mrs. Rewis was born April 3, 1932, to the late Jesse James Trueluck and Annie Lee Suggs Trueluck. She was a lifelong resident of Echols County and worked for 30 years with Levi Strauss Co. of Valdosta and was a member of Statenville Church of God.

Survivors include her husband, Nathan Rewis; one son and daughter-in-law, Terry Rewis (Debbie), Statenville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Janice Cantey (James), Statenville and Aline Crosby (Dan), Lake Park; four sisters, Betty Cumbess, Statenville, Lucille John, Homerville, Amy Gillard, Waycross, and Robbie Sowell of Howell; five grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Lois Barker Cooper

Lois Barker Cooper, 77, of Valdosta died Monday, Sept. 18, 2006, at South Georgia Medical Center. Born on Aug. 28 1929, in Lowndes County, she was the daughter of the late Johnnie Lynwood Barker and Mary Sue Coker Barker Youmans. Mrs. Cooper was a lifelong resident of this area and was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, John (Jack) Cooper of Valdosta; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Jack Cain, Jr. of Valdosta; grandchildren, Gretchen and Brandon Cowart of Hahira and Jenna Cain of Valdosta; a special aunt, Rachel Lofton of Valdosta; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Johnnie L. Barker.

Funeral services will be at 12:10 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with Father John O’Brien officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. There will be a Rosary at 6 p.m. today with visitation following until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Russell Shaver

Russell Shaver‚ 78, of Valdosta passed away Monday evening, Sept. 18, 2006, at South Georgia Medical Center after a sudden illness. He was born in Alachua County, Fla., and had lived in Duval County, Fla., for most of his life. Mr. Shaver was a member of MacClenny Primitive Baptist Church and retired from Fruit Growers Express Railroad as a mechanic. He served in the U.S. Army. His wife, Wilma Jean Edwards; and brother, Billy Shaver preceded him in death.

Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Loyce and Curt Beasley of Valdosta, Cheryl Bomar, Jacksonville, Fla., Karen and David Marlowe, Valdosta, Lori and Ali Rastegar, Valdosta; two sons, Rondy Shaver, Valdosta, Daryl Shaver, Lakeland; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Maxine Connell Steinberg

Maxine Connell Steinberg, 85, of Valdosta died on Monday, Sept. 18, 2006, in Valdosta from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born on Oct. 8, 1920 in Broxton, she was the daughter of the late J.C.E. and Clyde W. Connell and the widow of the late Rev. Robert F. Steinberg. Mrs. Steinberg served as the pianist at several churches where her husband was pastor. She taught piano to many students in her early years and was very active in all aspects of her church, which included WMU, Sunday School and Senior Adult activities. She loved to travel with her family and friends and was very active with the alumni of her Valdosta High School graduation class. She was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church.

Survivors are daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Al Simmons of Twin City, Roberta and Rudy Fields of Macon, Sarah and Joe Murrell of Jacksonville, Fla.; sons and daughters-in-law, Franklin and Fay Steinberg of Watkinsville, Ga., Raymond and Brenda Steinberg of Statesboro; sister, Mamye Breckenridge Trexler of Lakeland, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, at Crossroads Baptist Church with Dr. Ken Alford, the Rev. Thomas Simmons and the Rev. Charlie Scarborough officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
