Batman Giant 100 Page Comic

Many moons ago, as a kid, there was almost nothing better than having an extra bit of change to buy a giant 100-page DC Comic.

DC regularly printed these giant-size editions for Batman, Superman, the World War II action of Sgt. Rock and the Unknown Soldier, the “Twilight Zone”-style anthology of “The Unexpected” and many other titles.

Each giant 100-page comic contained multiple stories. For Superman and Batman, a giant issue would have at least one feature-length story starring the title character and then a few stories usually starring supporting cast. For example, a giant Batman issue might feature shorter stories featuring Robin, Batgirl and Man-Bat.

DC Comics has returned to this bargain hit from the 1970s with a new line of 100-page giant editions which can be found at Walmart near the check-out lines. There are titles for Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc.

Picking up a random issue, No. 9, of Batman giant 100-page comic, readers will find four stories featuring Batman, Green Lantern, Jonah Hex, Robin, Batgirl, etc.

However, unlike the 100-page comic from the past, these stories are not self-contained, stand-alone stories.

The story where Batman and Green Lantern travel back through time to meet gunslinger Jonah Hex in the Old West is intriguing but it’s the ninth chapter in an ongoing storyline. So, are the other stories which appear to be serialized reprints of past Batman stories.

And the cost is a bit more than spare change now. More like five bucks-plus per issue. Which is still a good deal for a 100-page comic but it’s frustrating to open the book and find it full of stories already in progress.
