VALDOSTA — The county will consider clearing the way for a privately-owned outdoor recreation facility at a Tuesday meeting.

The Lowndes County Board of Commissioners will vote on a request to rezone 14 acres located inside a larger 36 acre property on 3435 Bemiss Knights Academy Road, according to county documents.

At a Greater Lowndes Planning Commission meeting, the request was tabled after three residents spoke against approving the request.

According to county documents, the neighbors were worried about adverse consequences from the proposed recreational center such as increased traffic and crime rates in the area.

Residents living in Crestwood Subdivision brought up concerns about the effect it may have on property values.

The applicant also attended the GLPC meeting and spoke in favor of the request.

The county will also vote on whether to purchase $30,00 worth of tablets for the sheriff’s department. The tablets would replace current laptops in all patrol cars, according to documents.

It will then consider purchasing a cyber security system called Tyler Detect-Managed Threat Detection Services for $25,000.

County documents say cybercriminals are extremely adept at obtaining access undetected.

“The reality is that the faster the data breach can be identified and contained, the lower the cost,” county documents said. “It is critically important to have a live body monitoring our network 24/7 as we are not only protecting from computers but from live threat actors on the other end.”

Lastly, the county will vote on bids for administrative vehicles worth about $20,000, bids on five one-half ton trucks worth about $120,000 and bids on 13 three-quarter ton trucks worth about $360,000.

The meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the county administrative building on the second floor. The meeting is an open, public meeting.
