VALDOSTA — The Valdosta-Lowndes County Sports Commission put the finishing touches on plans for its inaugural Winnersville Triathlon during its recent monthly business meeting.

The triathlon, scheduled for the weekend of Sept. 7, at the Valdosta-Lowndes County 4-H facility, will feature a run course, a swim course and a bike course. An awards ceremony will be held shortly after the last race is complete to proclaim the 2007 Winnersville Triathlon champions.

“We are excited about our inaugural race event and we already expect a grand turnout,” Sports Commission President Herb Reinhard said.

Late registration for the event has begun. All racers are urged to become a member of USA Triathlon or pay for a one-day insurance fee to participate.

The Sports Commission also agreed to provide funds for the 2007 Harvey L. Moore Azalea Classic, scheduled for Friday through Monday.

The Classic will include an educational fair, a golf tournament, a gospel extravaganza and a football game at Bazemore Hyder Stadium between historically black colleges, Edward Waters College and Stillman College.

The sports commission noted this event will offer a broad range of programs, events and educational services that will respond to various needs of the community.

The next scheduled meeting for the Valdosta-Lowndes County Sports Commission is Sept. 18.
