VALDOSTA — The man who confessed to the First State Bank robbery on Norman Drive this summer died Saturday after he was found unresponsive in his Leon County Jail cell, where he was being held after his arrest for a Bank of America robbery in Tallahassee, Fla., last week.
Valdosta police had been on the lookout for the man who robbed First State Bank since July. When a suspect was arrested Friday moments after reportedly robbing Bank of America in Tallahassee, Valdosta detectives were informed that he matched the description of the suspect responsible for the First State Bank robbery.
After a confession to the robbery as well as several other robberies locally and in other states, David Bruce Voss, 57 of Orlando, Fla., was taken into the custody of the Leon County Jail.
He was charged with armed robbery in Valdosta, with additional charges pending in other jurisdictions, according to Valdosta Lt. Bobbi McGraw.
When correctional officers found Voss, who was in solitary confinement, unresponsive Saturday, he was transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. He died on the way despite paramedics’ efforts to revive him.
An autopsy has been conducted as Leon County Sheriff detectives investigate Voss’ death.
Leon County Sheriff Spokesman Chris Chase reported indications from the scene that suggest Voss, who was not on suicide watch, had self-inflicted wounds.
Voss, identified by authorities as the “Bicycle Bandit,” was a suspect in 28 bank robberies in 16 states, police said. He would typically use a locally purchased bicycle to flee crime scenes before getting into his car, according to a report in the Tallahassee Democrat.
McGraw said that the autopsy report is expected later this week.
