Men’s barbershop now open

Across from Mayo Fitness Center and sandwiched between Jim Hollis’ Scuba 7 and Wally Powell’s roofing company at 122 SW Monroe St., is a new barbershop poised to be unique in its service to the town of Mayo. It officially opened Tuesday, Dec. 11.

The business, called “Mayo Barber Shop,” is jointly owned by Joey and Jessica Broughton. The Broughtons are excited about opening their barbershop in downtown Mayo and are looking forward to serving the community for many years.

According to Broughton, the shop is a place where men, as well as boys, will receive a variety of services instead of a simple haircut. “Mayo Barber Shop will offer full service barbering services including wet cuts, dry cuts, face shaving, head shaving, beard trimming, and men’s styling,” Broughton said. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The Broughtons decided to open a barbershop in Mayo because, according to Joey, they saw a need for a place where men of the community could come in, relax, and get a haircut, without having to go elsewhere. “Over the years, I’ve repeatedly heard the men’s biggest complaint about hair cutting being that they didn’t like having to make appointments and they didn’t necessarily care for the atmosphere of a women’s salon,” Broughton said.

As a result of their hard work and dedication to fulfilling their dreams, the Broughtons, with the assistance of several members of the community-Allen and Sheilah Broughton, Kathy Keen, and Jim and Cheryl Hollis- there is now a place where men can visit, whether to get a hair cut or socialize with other men and enjoy free coffee.

Joey is a life-long resident of Lafayette County and is also the current owner of Quality Management Systems, Inc., a mechanical inspection company. Jessica graduated from Southern Barber College in Augusta, GA in 2002. She lived and grew up in Hephzibah, GA. They were married two years ago and have two children, Jayme, 14, and Hunter, 10. Jayme attends Lafayette High School.

Joey and Jessica said they love Lafayette County and the close-knit, family atmosphere that it provides, and plan to live, work, and raise their family here for a long time. “Jessica and I both love the small town life. We love the fact that everyone knows everyone and where people still call you by your name. We hope the shop will grow and become a staple of the small town, Lafayette County culture,” Joey said.
