American Legion to decorate veterans graves

Branford’s American Legion Post 59 plans to honor veterans on Memorial Day and on Veterans Day by placing a small U. S. Flag on their grave sites. Veterans buried in both the old and new sections of Oak Grove Cemetery will be honored. Other national holidays will be considered as manpower permits.

Permission has been given by town authorities for the Legion to put out the flags the day before the holiday and to remove them on the first work day afterwards. This will be done at no cost to the town or family members.

Post 59 has obtained some small unobstructive decals to place on the veterans head stone to identify him or her as a U. S. Veteran. The decal is blue and yellow in color, with the U. S. seal printed in the center. They are very small, approximately one inch in diameter and will greatly aid in the identifications of a veterans grave. They have a temporary adhesive back to be affixed to the lower portion (near the bottom) of the head stone and will barely be visible.

Should anyone have a loved one who is a U. S. Veteran buried in Oak Grove and their head stone has no markings indicating military service ( U. S. Navy, Air Force, Army, Marines, Coast Guard and qualified Merchants Marines), please contact Charlie Daniel, Post Commander (935-2308), or Bill Smith, Post Adjutant (935-0512) and let us know so we can honor as many, veterans as possible. Also, should anyone, for any reason, desire that no decal and/or flag be planced on a family member’s head stone, please notify us.
