SGMC recognizes Jones with BEE Award
Cora Jones was nominated by a patient’s wife for her care and compassion during their hospital stay. The nomination describes how Jones went above and beyond to ensure that both the patient and caregiver were taken care of with the essentials once admitted.
According to the nomination, Jones made sure that the caregiver had eaten and found her a pillow and blanket to make her more comfortable. She also took great care to clean and bathe the patient before getting him situated for his overnight stay.
The caregiver describes Jones as an angel who helped her see that she is doing a good job caring for her husband and helped her not feel alone.
“We never know how something we say or do can make a difference for another person,” the caregiver shared. “Mrs. Cora is that difference for me.”
The BEE Award is presented monthly and recognizes staff members who support the role of a nurse, which includes patient care technicians, nursing assistants, and medical assistants. Nomination criteria includes compassion, teamwork, leadership, attitude, and skills and knowledge.

SGMC honors nurse educators as Health System Heroes
South Georgia Medical Center recognized Bobbie Brooks, RN, and Kayla Turner, RN, as Health System Heroes at the October Board of Trustees meeting. The duo was honored for using high-reliability principles and identifying and driving process improvement to improve patient safety and quality.
Both Brooks and Turner have been with SGMC for eight years and currently serve as nurse educators for the medical and surgical floors. Over the years they have been instrumental in several process improvement initiatives, but their diligence and focus on patient safety as they worked through a no-harm event earned them the distinct recognition of Health System Heroes.
According to Director of Nursing Clinical Resources Elizabeth Salien, “During the initial investigation, the issue was thought to be a simple knowledge deficit; however, Bobbie and Kayla determined the issue lied in programming. This attention to detail allowed the team to ensure effective resolution across the entire organization.”
SGMC is currently in the process of becoming a High Reliability Organization (HRO) which embraces a culture of safety and unwavering dedication to quality. The process encourages every member of the health system to become an active participant in the pursuit of reliability, valuing open dialogue about potential risks and concerns.
