VALDOSTA — The Lowndes County Board of Education has named Sandra Wilcher the only finalist for the position of superintendent of Lowndes County Schools, according to district officials.
Wilcher has served as the interim superintendent since June 2023. She has 24 years of experience in the Lowndes County School System serving in numerous leadership roles.
The board’s search for a superintendent began in October 2023. The district hired consultants King-Cooper and Associates for assistance with the search.
“With the help of the search firm, the position was advertised, 13 applications were reviewed, candidates were screened, and interviews were conducted. The candidates included applicants from four states. With the naming of the sole finalist, the board shall wait at least 14 days before taking an official vote to employ Wilcher as the Lowndes County Schools superintendent,” the release Tuesday morning said.
Wilcher is a graduate of Valdosta State University with a B.A. Degree in Organizational Communication, where she also later obtained a master’s degree in Social Work. She graduated from Nova Southeastern University with an Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership. Her credentials include certification in Educational Leadership, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and a Nationally Certified School Social Work Specialist.
Her honors include being named the Lowndes/Valdosta Mental Health Professional of the Year in 2004, the Valdosta State University Social Work Alumni of the Year in 2005, and the Georgia School Social Worker of the Year in 2006.
She has been a participant in the Leadership Lowndes class and was the Hero of Hope Award Winner for the City of Valdosta and Lowndes County in 2022. She is currently a participant in the Georgia School Superintendents Association’s Superintendent Professional Development Program.
She has also been involved in both professional and community organizations. She has been a member of the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders, the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, and the Georgia and National Association of Social Workers. She has extensive experience in other agencies including the Department of Family and Children Services and the Lowndes County Juvenile and Superior Court Advisory Committees.
Wilcher and her husband, Lance, have two children: Reid Wilcher of Jacksonville, Florida, and Abigail Wilcher of Valdosta. They are the proud grandparents of a grandson, Atlas Courson. The Wilchers are active members of Northside Baptist Church.
