VALDOSTA – The City of Valdosta is set to receive $240,000 of federal funding through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), according to a press announcement Monday afternoon.
The announcement was made by U.S. Sens. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and Jon Ossoff (D-GA), and it detailed $3,562,400 in federal funding for localities across Georgia to promote better connectivity among communities and safer streets for bicyclists, pedestrians and drivers.
“These funds will help to better connect and protect Georgians who use our roads, public transit, and more to get to work, see loved ones, and explore our great state” Warnock said in the announcement.
The City of Valdosta was one out of 12 grant recipients. The recipient list showed various grant amounts with the largest award of $1,000,000 allocated to the City of Clarkston.
The recent funding is intended to help local governments create and execute comprehensive safety action plans. The announcement did not detail the exact roads or repairs the City of Valdosta would use the award for.
The release said the funds were made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), which established the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program that will provide over $5 billion in grants over the next five years.
“Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Senator Warnock and I are delivering upgrades to ensure pedestrian and commuter safety across Georgia,” Ossoff said. “I will continue delivering infrastructure upgrades across Georgia through this historic bipartisan effort.”
“I am glad to see Georgians continue to benefit from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law I was proud to champion,” Warnock said. “These funds will help to better connect and protect Georgians who use our roads, public transit, and more to get to work, see loved ones, and explore our great state. Senator Ossoff and I will continue to work to deliver even more investments to upgrade our state’s transportation infrastructure so Georgians can have safer communities and stronger connectivity.”
“Our senators and their respective teams have come through for Valdosta once again,” Valdosta Mayor Scott Jame Matheson said in the senators’ release. “The safe streets grant will allow us to take the deepest dive yet into creating a safe, walkable community for all to enjoy.”
The grants provide funding support for regional, local, and tribal initiatives to prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries.
The Safe Streets and Roads for All program also supports the Department’s National Roadway Safety Strategy and a goal of zero deaths and serious injuries on our nation’s roadways.
The release said project funding will be announced at a later date to help local communities implement improved safety features like pedestrian crossings and bicycle lanes, better signage along high-crash rural corridors, installation of various safety enhancements, and safe routes to school and public transit services, and more.
