- Valdosta Police Chief Leslie Manahan and Valdosta Fire Department Chief Brian Boutwell talk to reporters Monday at the scene of a search-and-rescue operation off Ulmer Avenue.
VALDOSTA — The body of a boating accident victim was located Monday morning after an extensive search by authorities at a pond on the south end of Valdosta.
Around 7:35 p.m. Sunday, authorities were notified of a possible drowning at a pond off Ulmer Avenue and U.S. 41 South, said Brian Boutwell, chief of the Valdosta Fire Department, who was on the scene Monday.
Two cousins in their 20s, both from Valdosta, were on a boat fishing when, according to reports, the boat tipped over, Boutwell said.
One cousin was taken to South Georgia Medical Center and was treated and released for hypothermia; the search was then on for the other cousin, the fire chief said.
The search was paused at 1:30 a.m. Monday for safety reasons and restarted with daybreak, he said.
Agencies involved with the search-and-rescue operation include the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, the Valdosta Police Department, the fire department, Lowndes County Fire Rescue, the Department of Natural Resources, the Turner County Sheriff’s Office, SGMCs’ ambulance service and the Coffee County Fire Department, Boutwell said.
A helicopter and drones using FLIR (forward-looking infrared) cameras as well as three boats using sonar were deployed, he said.
The police department was in charge of security on the scene, said Police Chief Leslie Manahan, who was also at the scene.
Divers found the missing cousin’s body Monday morning, a statement from the city of Valdosta said. The remains were taken to the Valdosta-Lowndes Regional Crime Laboratory, the statement said.
“The Valdosta fire and police departments extend prayers and condolences to the family and all those involved,” the city’s statement said.
