ATLANTA— The Vikettes’ playoff run has ended after a tremendous season for the Lowndes High School students. Their last game of the season took the team to Georgia State’s Convocation Center to battle the most intimidating team in the state in Grayson.

After a playoff series of many highs, such as the nail-biter win over Carrollton and their comeback to beat Milton, the Vikettes were put face-to-face against the at-the-time 30-0 Grayson Rams. The game would start slow; however, the Vikettes quickly found themselves outmatched against the Rams and lost the game 66-25.

The two teams would have a similar start to the game, with offense on both sides staying timid for the first half of the starting quarter. The game’s first point would be scored by free-throw by Vikette Kaci Demps nearly two-and-a-half minutes in. Danielle Carnegie of the Rams made her first appearance of many on the scoreboard with a layup and a free throw.

Vikette fans were thrilled by a 3-pointer from Leah Jones, but their excitement waned as the Vikettes failed to score for the rest of the quarter. The same would not be true for the Lady Rams, as they pulled off with a healthy lead.

Grayson’s Malaya Jones threw in her name with a 3-pointer, followed by another from Carnegie. The first quarter would be 13-4, with the Vikettes unable to get their footing.

The second quarter was not the improvement the Vikettes needed as the Rams furthered their lead into the half. Six points from the inside from Shamiaha Webb(, Kayla Jackson, and Kimora Wade were all the Vikettes could manage before the end of the first half. The Lady Rams continued where the last quarter left them, dropping 16 more points.

The Rams showed that they were just as formidable inside the line with no 3-pointers in the second quarter. Grayson’s points were contributed mainly by Jones and Carnegie, who exhibited remarkable synergy on the court. After ending the first half with a score of 29-10, the Vikettes would need to mount a comeback to get back into the game.

The third quarter would see Grayson extend their lead by 37 points, essentially taking the game before the final quarter. The Vikettes had their highest-scoring quarter of the game, scoring nine points. All points would come from inside the line, with Wade dashing into the paint for two layups.

The Rams continued to play aggressively, making nearly every possession have value. Grayson’s Taj Hunter and Erin Rodgers joined Carnegie as the team’s highest scorers for the third quarter. The titan of a team would spell the end of the game in the third quarter.

The final quarter was shortened due to the point gap, with the Vikettes not able to get a solid grip on the game throughout. The Vikettes put up another six points before the game ended 66-25. The final game of Lowndes High School girls might not have been successful, but the season is one to be proud of.

Wade scored 6 points to lead the Vikettes. Demps added 5 and Aryana Thomas scored 4.

Grayson entered the contest with a 30-0 record. They will play North Paulding in the state championship game.
