Rachel Black commits to play tennis at GSCU

VALDOSTA — Lowndes High School announces that senior Rachel Black officially committed to Georgia College and State University to join the women’s tennis team this fall.

Black’s commitment marks a milestone for the Viking tennis program, as she becomes only the second player in almost a decade to sign at the collegiate level.

“I picked up the racquet when I was about four years old, and I never put it down,” Black said, reflecting on her lifelong passion for the sport.

Her journey in tennis began with individual tournaments, but her transition to team play as a Viking has been particularly rewarding.

While at LHS, she holds an impressive record of 68 wins and just one loss.

Head tennis coach TJ Gay commends Black’s multifaceted game and unparalleled consistency, noting her ability to adapt strategically to her opponents. Her dedication extends beyond team practices, with her committing approximately 14-15 hours per week to training.

“Coaching Rachel is very easy,” Gay said. “She has been a leader since the beginning.”

He says that she is someone you can trust and always has the team’s best interest at heart.

“Watching an incredibly strong tennis player still do all the little things without ever complaining or being asked stands out,” Gay said of Black. “She looks for ways to serve her teammates, her coaches, and her school and truly leads by example.”

Black’s decision to join GCSU was influenced by the school’s tennis program and overall values, which resonated with her deeply rooted connection to LHS.

“People talk about Georgia College the way they talk about Lowndes High School,” she said. “They put people first.”

Her commitment to both excellence on and off the court has made her a respected figure within the school. She is a member of Beta Club, Interact, Key Club, FCA, Principal’s Advisory Committee, Yearbook, and holds positions in most. Black’s positive impact on campus also led to her being named Miss LHS.

With her skill and determination, Black is sure to make an impact at the college level. Despite her individual achievements, she remains focused on the power of teamwork.

“Being a part of a team brings such a positive environment,” she said. “It takes more than one person to win a match and it feels great to encourage other people and have them encourage you, too.”

Gay looks forward to following her college tennis career while noting that the Vikings will miss her.

“GCSU has no idea how fortunate they are that Rachel made the decision to go there,” says Gay. “I have no doubt that she will prove herself as a player, win over her teammates, and become a leader.”
