VALDOSTA — The 27th Annual Valdosta State Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Brunch is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 20, at 10 a.m., at the VSU Student Ballroom, located at the intersection of N. Oak Street and Baytree Road, at 1500 N. Patterson Street, Valdosta.
Fans can purchase tickets for the brunch at https://community.valdostastate.org/blazerhof. Tickets for the brunch are $25 and the brunch ticket also will allow access to the VSU basketball. doubleheader at The Complex that afternoon versus Lee University at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
The 27th edition of the Athletic Hall of Fame includes featuring six former student-athletes, three outstanding coach/administrators and two longtime contributors to Blazer athletics.
Shelby Altman (Softball, 2013-14)
This Blazer softball standout played two years at utility/shortstop, earning All-Gulf South Conference first team honors both years. She earned Second Team All-America at-large in 2014, hitting .406 for the season in 63 games played and started. She belted 86 hits with 16 doubles, 21 home runs and 72 RBI that season in 212 at bats.
Over her career, she racked up 150 hits for 110 runs with 29 doubles, 33 home runs and 127 RBI, which helped lead the Blazers to back-to-back Gulf South Conference Championships in 2013 and 2014 and national runner-up in 2014. She helped lead the team to a 94-28 record during her two years and a 48-16 mark in GSC play and two berths in the NCAA Division II National Championship appearances in Salem, Virginia.
Leo Blay (Men’s Tennis, 2015-2017)
Leo Blay played for Valdosta State men’s tennis for three seasons from 2015-2017. He began his outstanding career earning GSC Freshman of the Year in 2015, where he went 8-6 in singles and 8-5 in doubles. The Nice, France, native, finished the season ranked 19th in the ITA National Poll. Blay was also named to the 2015 All-GSC Men’s Tennis First Team. In 2016, he finished 7-3 in singles and 16-2 in doubles, earning GSC Player of the Year and All-GSC Men’s Tennis First Team.
Blay finished the season ranked eighth by the ITA and ninth for doubles with former Blazer standout Xavier Pineda. I n his final season in Titletown, Blay earned GSC Co-Player of the Year, going 12-3 in singles and 11-7 in doubles. He helped lead the Blazer tennis team to 15-5 record and a NCAA Division II men’s tennis tournament berth. Blay finished the season tenth nationally in singles. Blay helped lead the Blazers to appearances in the NCAA postseason each season, one Gulf South Conference championship and a berth in the quarterfinal round of the national tournament in 2016.
Michael Doscher (Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, 1996-2020)
As head strength and conditioning head coach at Valdosta State for 24 years, Coach Doscher’s contributions to Blazer athletics cannot be understated or undervalued. As one of the most recognized and respected strength and conditioning coaches in the country. Doscher helped mold the championship mentality in the Valdosta State football program, helping lead the Blazers to four national championships since 2004, including the 2018 championship. His effect on VSU athletics has not been limited to just football as he also helped the men’s tennis team to three straight NCAA championship matches, including the 2006 national title victory.
Doscher has been honored for his work on several occasions, including in 2005 when he was named the national College Strength and Conditioning Professional-of-the-Year by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He followed that by being named the Samson NCAA Division II Strength and Conditioning Coach-of-the-Year by American Football Weekly in 2007.
Skip Fite (Baseball, 1976-1977)
Skip Fite played second base and shortstop for Valdosta State baseball for two seasons in 1976 and 1977. During his two seasons, Fite hit .341 with 17 doubles, four triples, 43 RBIs, and 48 stolen bases. He struck out just 22 times in 413 at bats in his Blazer career. Fite earned All-America honors in 1977, and helped lead the Blazers to an NCAA Regional Championship and a berth in the 1977 College World Series.
Following graduation, Fite had a very successful career at the collegiate level in coaching for 39 years. He coached for 25 seasons at Augusta University and four at Brewton-Parker, before 10 seasons at the helm at West Georgia where he retired in 2019. As a head coach, he amassed more than 950 victories and was elected to the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame in 2014.
Mike Leach (Assistant Football Coach, 1992-1996)
Legendary coach Mike Leach came to Titletown in 1992 as offensive coordinator, quarterback and receiver coach for newly hired head coach Hal Mumme. The duo had been at Iowa Wesleyan College previously where they set numerous offensive records. Mumme and Leach brought the “Air Raid” offense with them to Valdosta State as they guided VSU to its first appearances in the NCAA postseason in 1994 and 1996.
While at VSU, Leach helped the Blazers finish third nationally in passing at 349.3 yards per game and 15th in total offense at 425 yards per game in 1995. VSU led the Gulf South Conference in both categories and was third in scoring offense at 26 points per game. The 1996 season was a year to remember as VSU won its first football league title, finishing 10-3 overall and 6-2 in GSC play. Leach then went to Kentucky with Mumme where they continued to set records with the “Air Raid.”
For his career, Leach spent 21 seasons as a head coach, holding an overall record of 158-107. He coached at Texas Tech, Washington State and Mississippi State producing 16 winning seasons and coached in 17 bowl games. Leach was inducted into the Texas Tech Hall of Honor in 2023.
Kenny Moore II (Football, 2013-2016)
Had an outstanding career for the red and black on the gridiron as he earned GSC All-Decade honors. While he played for the Blazers, Kenny earned AFCA All-America honors in 2016, becoming the 13th Blazer to do so, while he earned first team all-league honors and USA Today Second Team All-America accolades during his first three seasons. As a senior, he switched position to safety earning first team all-league and second team all-region accolades, while being named to the GSC Fall All-Academic Team.
For his career, he played in 46 games with 117 solo tackles and assisted in 54 stops for 171 total tackles. He registered 8.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Kenny ended his career with 11 interceptions for fifth-most in school history and scored two touchdowns. He helped lead VSU to a 33-13 record overall and a 19-9 mark in the GSC, including three playoff appearances and a national quarterfinal berth in 2014. He played every game for the Blazers in his first two seasons in 2013 and 2014, and by 2015 he established himself as one of the top defensive backs in the GSC.
Following completion of his VSU career, he signed a free agent contract with the New England Patriots in 2017 and then signed with the Indianapolis Colts where he has played since. In 2018, he earned a starting spot for the Colts and, in 2021, he was nominated for the Walter Payton Man of the Year, which is the highest individual honor in the National Football League. He has had an outstanding NFL career playing in 103 games with 89 starts and 17 interceptions, while becoming the first player in Colts’ history to record two pick-sixes in a game at Carolina on Nov. 11, 2023. Last spring, he became the eighth Blazer to earn the prestigious honor of being inducted into the GSC Hall of Fame.
Cedric O’Neal (Football, 2012-2015)
Cedric O’Neal was a key member of the 2012 National Championship football team at Valdosta State and a standout running back leading the Gulf South Conference in rushing yards in 2012 with 1,198. O’Neal is second all-time in VSU history in career rushing yards with 4,145 yards, while he is fourth all-time in GSC history. He sits second all-time in GSC history in career touchdowns with 49 scores and leads the VSU record book in rushing touchdowns.
O’Neal was named to the GSC All-Decade Team and earned GSC first team all-league honors three times, leading the school record book with rushing scores in 2015. O’Neal was named GSC Freshman of the Year in 2012, while he earned First Team All-America accolades in 2015.
He finished his career at 6.3 yards per carry are tied for fourth all-time in league history and second in school history. His 306 points scored are good for fourth-most in school history on 51 total touchdowns, while he is seventh all-time in scoring in league history. O’Neal signed a free agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016 and played for the Buffalo Bills. O’Neal was selected by the Jousters of The Spring League in October of 2020.
Herb Reinhard (Administrator/Athletic Director, 1992-2024)
Herb Reinhard has been the athletic director for Valdosta State for 32 years, beginning at the school in January of 1992 as he will complete his career in June of 2024. Reinhard is credited with prominently placing Valdosta State University on the national map of collegiate athletics, including a dominance across NCAA Division II programs. During his tenure, VSU’s athletic programs have won 50 of the school’s 54 Gulf South Conference Championships and 7 of its 8 National Championships.
Reinhard came to Titletown from Florida A&M University where he was the assistant athletic director for marketing and promotions. Reinhard is the longest tenured athletic director in the Gulf South Conference and also has been credited with restarting VSU women’s volleyball in 1995 and adding women’s soccer in 2011 and numerous projects including the addition of the VSU Athletic Fieldhouse in 2009. He was named one of 45 finalists for the NCAA Gold Award in honor of the 50th Anniversary of NCAA Division II in November, 2023.
Holly Satterfield (Softball, 2009-2011)
One of the players who helped define Valdosta State softball as one of the best players in the country. Satterfield was a proven winner holding a 72-13 career record as a starting pitcher for third all-time in GSC history in winning percentage. Her 72 wins are good for second all-time in school history. She was named to both the 2010 and 2011 All-GSC First Team, while being named All-GSC Second Team in 2009.
She earned GSC East Division Pitcher of the Year in both 2010 and 2011, recording a conference top ten ERA of 0.91 in 2011. She recorded 29 shutouts over her outstanding career for tenth-most in GSC history and third-most in school history. Satterfield sits fifth all-time in school history in strikeouts with 459, while boasting a 1.41 ERA for her career in 558 innings of work in 103 games played with 87 starts.
Dr. Cheri and Hamilton Tillman (Contributor, 1995-Present)
Dr. Cheri Tillman started the Athletic First Year Experience Program allowing her to be both a classroom professor and advisor for student-athletes and played a pivotal role in the academic success of student-athletes at VSU. In addition, Dr. Tillman was a professor and advisor to many members of the 2011 Men’s Tennis National Championship Team, as well as the 2012 and 2018 national championship football teams.
Hamilton Tillman has been a longtime volunteer photographer with numerous sports at VSU, including the men’s tennis national championship teams and two of the football national championships. Both Dr. Cheri and Hamilton Tillman have helped chair and sponsor multiple fundraising events for VSU athletics over the years.
