Troublesome intersection getting four-way stop

VALDOSTA — A Lowndes County intersection called a “terrible wreck site” by the county’s sheriff will be reworked with a four-way stop in the next few weeks.
The crossing of Ga. 125 — Bemiss Road — and Ga. 122 sits on the northern border of Lowndes County. Known locally as Walker’s Crossing, it marks the spot where three counties converge: Lowndes, Berrien and Lanier.
The north-south Bemiss Road runs nonstop through the intersection, while the east-west Ga. 122 has stop signs.
The intersection has seen a number of major wrecks in recent years, thanks in part to poor visibility, said Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk. The Georgia Department of Transportation said in a statement there were 60 crashes at Walker’s Crossing from Jan. 8, 2020-June 21, 2024.
“There was a wreck with a fatality there just a couple of weeks back,” Paulk said.
The fact that three counties touch at the intersection makes questions of first responder response and jurisdiction “confusing,” the sheriff said.
Work will start on the four-way stop conversion July 15 and should take no more than a couple of days, the transportation department said. The cost of the project is about $17,000.
The GDOT originally suggested building a roundabout at the intersection, similar to those used at the I-75 on/off ramps in Lake Park, but was dropped because of public feedback, the department’s statement said.
