UNDATED (AP) — Plaintiffs’ attorneys in a federal antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA that is not part of a recent $2.78 billion settlement agreement filed a motion Friday asking a judge to deny preliminary approval of the deal. Attorneys in Fontenot v. the NCAA say the agreement to settle three antitrust lawsuits facing the association and five major conferences is settling for “just pennies on the dollar.” The NCAA, Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and Southeastern Conference agreed in May to pay billions in damages to former and current college athletes. A preliminary approval hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 5.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa linebacker Jay Higgins was the first one to decide to skip the NFL draft and come back for another season. And then he waited for his defensive teammates to follow him. They did, and now the Hawkeyes have a defense that coach Kirk Ferentz calls one of his most veteran groups since he became head coach of the program in 1999. Nine of the first-team spots on defense are filled by players who are either seniors or graduate players. Seven of the top eight tacklers from last season are back from a defense that ranked as one of the nation’s best.

UNDATED (AP) — Gold-medal-winning Olympic gymnasts Jordan Chiles and Jade Carey are heading back to school. Chiles and Carey — part of the “Golden Girls” squad led by Simone Biles that soared to gold in Paris — have both announced they are returning to college. Chiles goes to UCLA, and Carey is at Oregon State. Carey, who boosted her career Olympic medal total to three by also earning bronze on vault, has one year of eligibility remaining. Chiles, who added a bronze on floor to go with her team gold, has two years of eligibility left with the Bruins.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The NCAA says former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh had impermissible contact with recruits and players while access was restricted during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has handed him a four-year show-cause order if he wants to return to college coaching. The NCAA says Harbaugh engaged in unethical conduct, failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance and violated head coach responsibility obligations. Harbaugh left the national-championship winning Wolverines to coach the Los Angeles Chargers. The NCAA has already given Michigan three years of probation, a fine and recruiting limits in the same case.

UNDATED (AP) — Women’s college basketball teams are a step away from getting financially rewarded for success in the NCAA Tournament. The Division I Board of Directors agreed to introduce a proposal to give performance units to teams that make March Madness. Units represent revenue from the NCAA’s lucrative media rights deal. They have long been a part of the men’s tournament. Under the new media rights deal with ESPN, women’s basketball is valued at $65 million per tournament — roughly 10 times more than in the contract that ends this year. If approved in January, the plan would take effect in 2025.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska offensive lineman Teddy Prochazka has suffered a season-ending knee injury for the third time in four years. Prochazka tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee Monday during a one-on-one drill. He was in line to be the starting left tackle. Rhule said redshirt freshman Gunnar Gottula has been working at left tackle with the No. 1 offense. Prochazka played in 10 games last season and started the last five at left tackle. He started three games in 2022 before a right knee injury ended his season. In 2021, he tore the ACL in his left knee.

NEW YORK (AP) — Georgia will open the season ranked No. 1 in the preseason USA Today Coaches Poll a year after having its two-year run as national champion end. The Bulldogs received 46 of the 55 first-place votes from college football coaches. Preseason No. 2 Ohio State got seven votes at No. 1, followed by Oregon, Texas and Alabama. The Associated Press preseason college football poll is scheduled to be released next Monday. Texas and defending national champion Michigan each got a first-place vote. The Wolverines will open ranked No. 8.
