VALDOSTA — Police arrested a man accused of burglary Monday after he led officers on a short chase.
Around 1:20 p.m., an E911 caller said he’d seen a man stealing from his home on East Force Street, a Valdosta Police Department statement said. Security cameras caught the suspect taking a gas can.
Based on a description provided by the victim, an officer spotted a suspect walking in the roadway; when the officer tried to talk with him, the suspect dropped the gas can and ran, police said.
The suspect was soon apprehended and officers recovered a handgun in the suspect’s clothing.
The suspect — a 28-year-old man — was charged with felony burglary, felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, felony possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and misdemeanor obstruction of a law enforcement officer, the police statement said.
“This victim’s security cameras were a valuable resource during this incident. Based on the information received by the cameras, our observant officer did an outstanding job quickly locating this offender. Our officers’ persistence resulted in a gun being located and an offender being held accountable for his actions,” said Police Chief Leslie Manahan.
