Southside Library Boosters, Inc. to host activities to celebrate Black History Month

VALDOSTA — Southside Library Boosters, Inc. will host activities to commemorate Black History Month in February. The events will be held at the McMullen-Southside Library, 527 Griffin Ave.

Events include:

— Saturday, Feb. 1st  from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. “Telling The Story”:An interactive session with area African-American authors and artists. Refreshments will be served. If you are a writer or artist and interested in participating/setting up, please call (229) 253-8313 or (229) 460-9019.

— Thursday, Feb. 13,  at 6 p.m., The Annual Black History Program with dancing/singing/music, the African Dance Troupe and Drummers, poetry readings, and the recognition of “community heroes.” If you know someone who is working tirelessly in the community, who should be honored, please call (229) 253-8313 or (229) 460-9019 with the name of the honoree and his or her accomplishments. Light refreshments will be served.

— Saturday, Feb. 22 from 3-4 p.m.,  African-American “READ-IN”: Please come and read a storybook with  a child. The library is seeking volunteers to come out and “donate” about 30 minutes by helping a child select a book, allow the child to read to them and discuss/talk about the book. Readers will receive a token; volunteers will be honored.
