Region 1-6A basketball races heating up

VALDOSTA — It’s another big weekend of basketball in Region 1-6A, but it’s going to take much longer to sort out the boys.

This weekend’s schedule has three Region 1 games for Friday — Camden at Lowndes; Richmond Hill at Valdosta, and Colquitt at Tift. Tift travels to Valdosta Saturday and Richmond Hill will be at Colquitt.

Colquitt County leads 1-6A’s boys with a 4-0 record, and are 12-2 overall. Valdosta and Richmond Hill are both 2-2. Lowndes and Tift County hold 1-2 marks and Camden County is 1-3.

All but Lowndes will have seen all region foes by the end of the weekend. The Vikings and Vikettes have yet to play Richmond Hill.

Colquitt’s Packers won over Valdosta Tuesday, 45-43. When they raised their mark to 3-0 over the weekend, it was their best start in the region since 1997-98. Moultrie sports editor Wayne Grandy said the 4-0 record is their best since 1982-83, also the last year, the Packers won a region title, that being Region 1-4A.

Among the scoring leaders for 1-6A are Jabarri Williams, who averages 16.9 points per game, Kam Jackson of Lowndes is at 13.1 and Travis Herrin of Camden at 12.8.

Girls standings has Lowndes on top at 3-0. The Vikettes ran their overall record to 14-1 Tuesday night at Thomasville. No Georgia school has come closer than 17 points to Lowndes so far.

Camden and Richmond Hill each have a 3-1 mark. Colquitt is 2-2. Either Tift or Valdosta will pick up their initial region win by the end of Saturday. The former is 0-3 and the Lady ‘Cats are 0-4.

The top boys and girls teams during the regular season will host region tournaments. The tournaments will be staggered to have all girls or all boys playing, depending on date.

Statistically Colquitt’s Amira Walters-Smith is leading 1-6A by averaging 19.7 points per game. Aryanna Thomas (Lowndes) is second at 15.6 and Kaci Demps, also of Lowndes is third at 15.3. Fourth is Tift’s Jalaya Miller at 12.8.
