WARRENTON — Georgia Christian almost pulled off a big upset, but the Lady Generals saw their basketball season come to an end Tuesday at the hands of Briarwood Academy.

Briarwood survived a late Lady Generals rally to win 48-45 in the first round of the GIAA Class 2A meet. They move to play Southwest Georgia Academy in Friday quarterfinals in Macon.

Georgia Christian, the No. 10 seed to Briarwood’s, No. 7, trailed by 14 points going into the fourth quarter.

Kendall Corbett and Jaya Guilliams had a 7-1 run to begin the frame and at 5:15, the Lady Generals were down 41-33.

Not even two minutes later, Corbett hit a three-pointer. Guilliams made a pair of free throws at 2:46 and it was a 45-40 game.

A ball rolled off the rim to keep it from being a one-possession game with a little over a minute to play, but Corbett stole and inbounds pass and scored to make it 45-42 at 47 seconds left.

Unfortunately for Georgia Christian, Briarwood was excellent at the free throw stripe. They went 2 of 2 to get their lead back to five.

Corbett was true again from behind the arc with 18 seconds left. The Lady Bucs made one free throw with 8 seconds left and missed the second, the ball rolling out of bounds and going to the visitors on a turnover with five seconds to go.

Briarwood held close on defense and a desperation heave by GCS was short of its target.

Georgia Christian scored the first four points Tuesday and held a narrow 11-9 lead after a quarter. Sage Grimes gave them a 15-12 lead in the second period, but that was their last of the night.

A 9-0 run put the Lady Buccaneers ahead, 21-15. Maddie Mira’s free throw near halftime kept it close at 21-18.

The third quarter was even more productive for Briarwood Academy and they took a 40-26 lead going into the fourth.

Corbett scored 23 for Georgia Christian and Guilliams had 14. The GCS Generals were scheduled to play at Southwest Georgia for their first-round game Wednesday.
