VALDOSTA — Three Valdosta High wrestlers placed over the weekend at the Class 6A traditional tournament at the Macon Coliseum.
Valdosta’s Michael Densmore placed third at 106 pounds, Marquavious Lane was fourth at 120 and Simon Roundtree earned sixth at 285.
Densmore made it to the semifinals by way of a pin and 7-2 decision, but fell to eventual state champion Teequavius Mills (Mill Creek). From there, Densmore won once more to reach the third-place match, where he won a 9-0 major decision over Caden May of Lambert.
Lane, too, reached the semifinals in his bracket. Harrison’s Ty Valenzuela won over him there by a 2-1 decision and when Lane reached the third-place match, he had the bad luck to run into Valenzuela once more.
Roundtree won in the first round in a 16-3 major decision. Region rival Joseph Schulze of Camden County won in the quarterfinals. In the wrestlebacks, Roundtree kept surviving with a 9-2 decision, then a quick pin. That ensured him of placing and he ended up falling in the fifth-place match on points.
For Lowndes, Noah Scott won twice at 106 pounds, but fell one match short of placing. Ian Stephens earned a first-round fall at 144, but after falling in the semis, didn’t get an opportunity to place. He had to medically forfeit his next match, ending his tournament.
Valrie Medina, wrestling in the girls state championships, also was one match short of placing. Medina, competing for Lowndes at 140 pounds, won her first-round match via a 13-4 major decision. A close 6-5 match sent Medina to the consolation side of the bracket.
There, Medina won once via pin, then had another close loss, 10-7 against Mayah Owens of Newnan.
Tavaris Sharp of Valdosta recorded a win at 126, as did Landon Sampson at 190. Jahsir Pleasant wrestled at 157.
