Detectives found Jakia Mensah had been in a fight with a suspect which resulted in the suspect grabbing her cell phone and car keys; Jakia pulled a knife and began to assault the suspect as he tried to get her into a vehicle, the statement said.

As the suspect left in Jakia’s vehicle, Jackia’s mother, Treesy, tried to intervene by getting in between the two parties; the suspect struck Treesy, Jakia and a 13-year-old with the car, the statement said. The 13-year-old was not seriously injured.

The suspect was found near a relative’s home after he called E911 to report he had run over someone; he was taken to SGMC where he was treated and released. Jakia Mensah was also treated at SGMC and released, police said.

An autopsy ruled Treesy Mensah was killed from injuries caused by being struck by the car.

The suspect — Malik Crumpton, 24, of Valdosta — was charged with felony murder, felony homicide by vehicle, felony theft by taking motor vehicle, felony robbery by sudden snatching, misdemeanor accident hit and run, misdemeanor criminal vandalism and misdemeanor cruelty to children in the third degree, police said.

Jakia Mensah, 25, of Valdosta was charged with felony aggravated assault and felony possession of a knife during the commission of a felony, the statement ssaid.

“This is a tragic incident that should not have occurred. The dispute between these two subjects escalated quickly, resulting in a mother losing her life. Our condolences go out to Treesy’s family and friends,” said Police Chief Leslie Manahan
