VALDOSTA — A Sunday afternoon gunfight left two people wounded and one of them charged with a pair of felonies.
About 12:45 p.m. Sunday, Valdosta police officers responded to the 400 block of Northside Drive after E911 received calls about a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Jaquevius King, 21, with a gunshot wound to his knee, police said in a statement.
As officers were speaking with King and other witnesses, they received information that another man had been shot and had driven himself to the hospital. Officers met with a 22-year-old male in the emergency room, who had multiple gunshot wounds to his torso area.
SGMC Health EMS transported King to the hospital for the injury to his knee.
Police said the two men knew each other and were in an altercation at a convenience store when King produced a firearm and shot the other man.
After being shot, the 22-year-old man retrieved a gun and shot back, striking King, police said.
Police said King was treated and released from SGMC and was then transported to Lowndes County Jail. He has been charged with aggravated assault (felony) and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony (felony).
The investigation is ongoing.
The 22-year-old man is in stable condition.
“At 12:45 in the afternoon, on a Sunday, at one of the busiest intersections in the city, we are extremely lucky that this reckless disregard for the public’s safety did not injure any innocent bystanders,” said Chief Leslie Manahan.
