Vikettes advance to 6A golf sectionals

TIFTON — The Lowndes Vikettes will attempt to qualify for the Class 6A state golf tournament next month after almost doing so Monday at the region/area meet.

Lowndes placed third in Region 1-6A, and third in the area with a team score of 249 at the tournament, held at Spring Hill Country Club in Tifton.

Richmond Hill was first at 232. Its roster that included tournament low medalist Alexa Mohler, who shot a two-under 70. Tift County placed second at 239. Both teams automatically advanced to state.

Counting towards the Vikettes’ score were Catherine Odom, who shot a 73, Sophia Martin at 87 and Taylor Akins at 89.

After Lowndes, Camden County was fourth at 278 and Harrison came in at 284. Colquitt County shot 304 and Campbell scored 331.

Valdosta was to have had two golfers competing Monday, but both withdrew.

Sectionals are scheduled for May 6-7 at Villa Rica. Should Lowndes advance, the Vikettes would be played on their own course for the finals. Kinderlou Forest will host the Class 6A boys and girls May 19-20.

Lowndes’ boys team will be on the course next Monday at Sunset in Moultrie.
